The 37-minute film follows my return to Mohenjo-daro after 52 years, walking the site itself and exploring what we know — and still don't — about one of the world's greatest lost civilizations. It was selected for the South Asian Short Film Festival in Kolkata, and I'm hoping it finds an audience well beyond that. Originally planned as part of the celebration for 30 years of Harappa.com in 2025, it is finally out.
A brief description:
Mohenjo-daro: Unsealing an Ancient Indus City explores the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished over 4,000 years ago along the Indus and other rivers in what is now Pakistan and India. I walk through the actual site and discuss the Priest-King, the Dancing Girl, the Great Bath, the so-called Stupa, the undeciphered writing, and the key controversies and unanswered questions that surround them all. The film features interviews with numerous leading scholars, high-quality graphics, rare images, recreations, and the voices and music of Sindh. Meant for students, educators, and anyone curious about the ancient world.
The documentary is divided into five chapters, and has human-generated subtitles in Hindi, Urdu and Tamil:
