Mohenjo-daro Movie at Two Indian Film Festivals

  • Mohenjo-daro Movie Poster plus Laurels

Mohenjo-daro: Unsealing an Ancient Indus City has been selected for two upcoming film fests in India, the 15th Bangalore Shorts Film Fest, where it will be shown on June 21st, 2026. It has also been selected for the 9th South Asian Short Film Festival (SASFF) in Kolkata, where it will be shown on July 8th in the 1 pm slot at NANDAN – The Film Centre.

Numerous people contributed to this production: Richard Levien, Editor and Co-writer was invaluable; Kyle Aaron Golub did the original art work that runs throughout the production; Rahul Varma did the gripping 3-D recreations and other complex visual effects; Yahya Javed was responsible for the fine map animations; and Lahooti Live Sessions and Saif Samejo contributed the many beautiful music pieces by numerous Sindhi artists.

Onscreen interviewees to whom I am most grateful include Dr. Romila Thapar; the late Drs. Shereen Ratnagar and Ahmed Hasan Dani; the late Iravatham Mahadevan; and Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Shar, Sheikh Javid Ali Sindhi, Irshad Ali Solangi and Mohammad Ilyas. The presence of all these diverse scholars, tour guides and local residents is most appreciated.

Off-screen, among others, Dr. Jonathan Mark Kenoyer was a critical resource for images and advice; Dr. R. H. Meadow contributed many images too, not to mention numerous archives and individuals whose images and interpretations are also highlighted. Aslam Khwaja was an exceptional colleague at Mohenjo-daro. Most recently, Ilona Aronovsky built our very first quiz based on the movie using YouTube's new feature enabling this feature.

Finally, however much time has elapsed since the ancient Indus civilization flourished some four thousand years ago, I see and feel this site as deeply embedded in Sindh and its cultures. There is a continuity – just like with Harappa and the Punjabi countryside – that feels very much alive and relevant today.
