First Excavations at Harappa
1921: Sahni's First Finds at Harappa

Female Figurines

It is appropriate that Daya Ram Sahni quickly found female figurines on Mound F, for female figurines greatly outnumber those of men at ancient Indus sites.

For more examples of figurines from Harappa, see the 72 slide series Embodying Indus Life.

ASI Description

A. 56 A Grotesquely shaped female figure (height 4 1/2"). Both the arms and feet are missing. Traces of scarf [?] on the thighs.

A. 225 Terracotta figure (height 3 1/4"), without legs and arms, which might have been a caricatural representation.

A. 78 Cancelled [no explanation].

[Appendix D] 2809 Two terracotta female figurines (A 56 and 78) and an uncertain figure (A 225).

[Original caption [sic]: Terracotta figure and hands of a jar
