1924-25: A Lost City Emerges

Terracotta animals and miscellaneous objects

Four terracotta animal figures in a row.

Left: possibly an armadillo, find no. Ab 923, found in Mound F in the parallel wall area, and which is published in Vats 1940 (Vol. II) Pl. LXXVII no. 26, and described by Vats:
“No. 26 (Ab923) is a fine representation in terracotta of an armadillo. Its head, eyes, long tail, and bony granulated skin are faithfully represented. The feet are broken. It was coated with a white slip of which clear traces have survived. L. 3-6 in. Mound F, Great Granary Area; Depth 8 ft. b.s.” (1940, p. 304)

Third from left: snake, find no. Ab 207. See Terracotta snake and coonch for description. Sahni noted the find from Mound F in the area of parallel walls (ARASI 1924-25, p. 77).

Right: Likely a Rhinoceros.
