Circular Hearth with Platform in western portion of Trench A (f)
Described by Sahni as a paved circular structure. This can be seen in the foreground of Plate X (a), Vats 1940, Vol. II that shows a ‘General View of Trench Af from North-West’
Label on the brick [paved] structure: ‘?To A [illegible]’
Sahni: “In the area between the trench ‘Ae’ described above and the long trench A, a large rectangular cutting A(f), 89'X 66', was made and excavated to the depth of about 6' below the surface. Here, as elsewhere, no complete structural remains were found, but reference may be made to two little circular structures paved in brick on a thick substratum of hard burnt nodules of brick. The structures are blackened with soot but it is difficult to say definitely whether they were hearths or chimneys of some kind. … It is noteworthy that no hand mills for grinding corn were found anyw'liere on the site.”
- Daya Ram Sahni, ARASI 1924-25, p. 79-80.
Vats: “In the centre of the western part of this mound Rai Bahadur Daya Ram Sahni dug two shallow trenches designated on the site plan as Af and Ai, which measure along the major axes 119 by 89 ft., and 100 by 30 ft. respectively (PI. I). The whole of Ai and the greater part of Af lie between the contour lines of 545 and 550. Neither of them contains more than a few fragmentary brick remains assignable to the 1st and Ilnd strata. [footnote 2: a plan of these trenches is unnecessary] In Trench Af, are two small paved circular structures resting on a thick substratum of burnt brick nodules (PL X, a, foreground).”
