|Joint German-Pakistani Archaeological Mission to Kalat|

Team 1998
The Joint German-Pakistani Archaeological Mission to Kalat was formed in Winter 1996 by Ute Franke-Vogt, Seminar fuer Vorderasiatische Altertumskunde, Free University of Berlin, Germany, and the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Karachi, represented by Saleem-ul Haq.

Our gratitude is due to the past and present Director Generals, Niaz Rasool and Saed-ur-Rahman, for the permission to carry out this fieldwork, and for the fruitful and ongoing cooperation collaboration. We are also indebted to the administrative staff of the headquarter, in particular M.H. Khan Khattak and Taheer Saeed.

The Joint German-Pakistani Archaeological Mission to Kalat is financed by the German Foreign Office, Berlin, Germany. It also received additional, and often substantial, support from the following companies, institutions and individuals: Pasminco Exploration, Pakistan (1997, 1998), LASMO Oil Pakistan (1999, 2000), Swiss Air (1999), Mr. Ubaid ar-Rahman, MCC Pakistan (1999), the Free University of Berlin (1998), and the German Archaeological Institute, Eurasia Dept. (1998, 1999). We wish to express our sincerest thanks to all of them for facilitating this research through funding and crucial logistic aid, and for their support.

N. Bennecke, F. Bruhn, A. van den Driesch, H. Erlenkeuser, J.Goersdorf, B.Heussner, and R.Neef conducted various analyses and provided comments and explanations for various classes of remains. Likewise, we have benefitted from numerous discussions with the geologists and geomorpholgists working for Pasminco Pakistan and LASMO Oil Pakistan Limited. We also wish to acknowledge the support of the German Embassy in Islamabad, in particular M.Kiesler, of the German Consulate in Karachi, and of Mr. Kalinowski, German Foreign Office, Berlin.

Warm thanks go to our friends in Pakistan for their indispensable hospitality, friendship and support: A. Ibrahim, K. Lashari, Y. & S. Lari, M. Osorio, C. Majid, and U. & S. Ansari.

Working in various and often very remote portions of the area made us depend on hospitality and help, and brought us close to different segments of the local population and administration. We wish to extend our thanks to the AC Bela for providing us accomodation, to our local workforces for making us familiar with the high variability of the perception of labour and inter-ethnic conflicts (and their resolution), the Levies, in particular Hashem in Dudhar, who accompanied us patiently and guided us safely, and to our drivers and cooks. Special thanks go to Asif who became our indispensable companion, and to Sulayman in Karachi.

Last but by no means least: The enthusiasm, endurance and devotion of the team members carried the project on in often difficult situations. They made it all work: M. H. K. Khattak, M. Hassan, P. Eckerle, M. Haan, A. Gubisch, W. Grajetzki, and C. Mueller-Hazenbos. < ESSAY 1
