3. UK Primary School Approaches
Years 4 & 5 watched Time Team & brainstormed the skills of archaeologists. Using powerpoint and harappa.com photos, they "toured" Mohenjo Daro, making hypotheses about the nature & functions of building remains (a great lesson!). They wrote
persuasive letters to Unesco in Literacy Time; putting the case for funding more research, they explained what they had found out, & what they wanted to find out.
Year 6 children discussed why underground drains in the city were built with a
gradient! A meaningful application of a mathematical concept!
Pupils used photos from harappa.com 'Around the Indus' - Slide Show I, to make presentations showing some aspect of Harappan Civilization. They presented their shows to the rest of the class and tried to answer questions which arose. This
provoked lively debate and encouraged the children to investigate topics further
"Teachers provide sound explanations and often use imaginative and effective strategies to promote the pupils' learning. Key Stage 2 pupils worked in groups to frame questions to put to an [Indus] archaeologist about the artefacts he had found. They responded
very well to this challenge & the activity enabled them to engage with issues of
evidence, change and causation."
