First Excavations at Harappa
1924-25: A Lost City Emerges

Pit where Lingam was Discovered

A view of Trench A (i), Mound F, which Sahni excavated to the east of Trench A (f). Deep vertical cuttings mark the sides of the trench, showing the excavation of this area. A labourer is sitting close to some of the finds of structures, of bricks.

Sahni found an obelisk like stone object, which he inferred to be a shiva linga from this trench.

Trench Ai measured “100' x 31'” [Sahni, p. 77], and for details of the finds of the shiva linga see catalogue for Sandstone lingam insitu.

- Daya Ram Sahni ARASI 1924-25, pp. 77-8.

Note: See Pit where Lingam was Discovered for another view of this trench at the same stage of excavations.
