First Excavations at Harappa
1924-25: A Lost City Emerges

Earthen Jar Excavations

Earthen jar found in Trench A (f).

The description of the duplicate photo 40: Large earthen jar (A) of 21 found in western portion of Tr. A (f).

The contents of a large and broken jar comprise small terracotta vessels, of which two look, more or less, intact. One has a pointed base, and is smaller than the round vessel with, possibly, a lid.

Notably, Vats reported that “In the western part of this trench was found a well preserved, large napiform jar No. Af 21 at a depth of 4 ft. It is 3 ft. 1 ½ in. in height and 2ft. 9 in. in diameter, and presumably had the usual contents of post-cremation urns” (Vats 1940, Vol. I, p. 51).
