[The ancient town of Quetta came under British rule in 1876 when Robert Sandeman subdued the Khan of Kalat and made it the capital of his political agency in Baluchistan. The town quickly grew into a sprawling cantonment, reinforcing the southern border with Afghanistan during various 19th century crises. Its pleasant climate also made it a popular military training area for the British Indian and now the Pakistani army. Most of the city shown in these four photographs was completely destroyed in the great Quetta earthquake of 1931 which killed some 30,000 people. Another Bremner view of the Club.]
